Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary & Jaguar Reserve

The Cocks Comb Basin is located in the Stann Creek District and is a 40-minute drive from the coastal town of Dangriga. The area was declared a National Reserve in 1984. Today it includes over 100,000 acres of raw jungle. Cockscomb is the largest jaguar reserve in the world and is home to a variety of wildlife including the jaguar, ocelots, jaguarondis, scarlet macaw parrots, and the Baird’s tapir (Belize’s national animal). The first known human inhabitants were the ancient Maya Indians. There’s a number of walking trails ranging from easy to moderate to strenuous. Many streams and tributaries of the South Stann Creek River and The Sittee River meander through the reserve. Lush jungle (classified as tropical moist forest) in which mahogany, cieba, cohune palm trees can be found as well as orchids, tree ferns, climbing vines, and a large variety of birds (over 290 species have been recorded) Hike to dramatic waterfalls. The Black Hole Drop Jungle Repelling

This expedition starts off with a vigorous hike into the foothills of the Maya Mountains. The edge of the Actun Loch Tunich sink hole sits over 300 feet above the basin below, 200 feet above the rainforest canopy that grows out from the sink hole basin. Caving guides then rig a system of rappelling ropes for your decent to the basin below. The first 10 feet provides the adrenaline, the next 200 feet provides an unforgettable experience and sights to behold, the last 100 feet takes you down through the rainforest canopy. Once you’re at the bottom, hike out of the foothills back to the base camp.
